Vantablack®

Vantablack®

Vantablack, which stands for Vertically Aligned Nanotube Array black, is a coating developed by Surrey NanoSystems that absorbs almost all of the light it interacts with, making for the blackest black. The coating is made up of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are arranged in a way the allows photons to enter, then reflects those photons over and over until they are absorbed and converted to heat. The result is a black so black it looks Photoshoped.

Vantablack is mostly used in space science applications, but we're sure there'll be plenty of B.A.B.ies wanting to use this type of coating for more obscure uses. For the 2018 Winter Olympics, architect Asif Kahn's Hyundai Pavillion was sprayed with Vantablack, making it the blackest building on Earth. While it' not easily accessible to just anyone, there are other companies that make Vantablack-like paint. More on that later. For now, if you wanna learn more about the science behind Vantablack, head to their website, and check out the pictures and videos below.
